Obituary
Celebration of Life ~ Joyce Mae Harley

Joyce Mae Harley, born in Richmond, St. Mary to Madeline McDermott (Landells) and Perceival McDermott (both preceding in death), sister to Dolly McDermott (deceased), Olga Bennett
(Valentine Bennett) (both deceased), Henry McDermott (Daphne McDermott) (both deceased), Vida McDermott, Minette Nunes (Barry Nunes) and Patrick McDermott (Delores McDermott),
wife of Naval W. Harley, and mother to Edward Harley (Sandra Harley), Judith Hamilton (Gary Hamilton), Joan Harley-Smith (Morris Smith), Julia Coleman (Dennis Coleman), and Denise
Harley (Daughter in Law). She enjoyed her eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Joyce, even to her time of transition to be with the LORD, held a strong faith in Jesus Christ as her Saviour and LORD. She exhibited her faith in worship to the LORD and was renowned for her operatic soprano voice. She was a long standing member of Mountain View Seventh Day Baptist Church and while living in Florida, joined the membership of Miami Seventh Day Baptist Church. She diligently served while at both congregations as Sabbath School Superintendent and at times as Sabbath School Teacher.  She also served in other capacities. The Spirit of the LORD endowed her with the gift of giving.  She gave prodigiously to everyone and cared about their well being. We all benefited from her servant heart and gift for hospitality.  We can recall many expressions of her vast culinary skills; “If Sister Harley cooked it, they ate with relish.”

Her passion for the aged was very evident as she ministered through the Golden Age Club at Mountain View Seventh Day Baptist. She founded this group with the support of the Ministry of
Social Security.

A graduate of Kingston Technical High School, Joyce dedicated her life educating the minds of young Jamaicans at Dunrobin High School (Home Economics) and Crandall High School (Home Economics, English and Health Science).  She held the position of Principal at Crandall High School and left to join her husband in business as a director at Harman Sales Company,
LTD.

Joyce enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, cooking, machine embroidery, floral arranging, and cake decorating. Her philosophy was you are never too old to learn something new. She was a phenomenal woman, daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  She will be sorely missed.

Cremation of remains and interment at the Columbarium at Meadowrest at a later date.
